About Classic Arcade Minesweeper

Classic Arcade Minesweeper strips the classic away from installers and launchers: open the page, click a square and the board generates itself around your opening move.

The neon palette and chiptune feedback place a 1990s desktop game in an arcade cabinet. The rules have not changed since the original. Every revealed square either opens into empty space or shows a number, and that number is the exact count of mines touching it across all eight neighbouring squares.

Controls are deliberately small in number: left-click to reveal, right-click to flag, or use the on-screen mode toggle if you are playing on a touchscreen. The mine counter and timer update live as you play.

First-click safety is built in. Mines are placed only after your opening dig and never inside the 3x3 area around it, which means every game starts with real information instead of a coin flip. Technically the whole thing is a small React application styled with Tailwind CSS. The page is server-rendered, so search engines and slow connections both receive readable HTML immediately, and the sound effects are synthesized live with the Web Audio API rather than downloaded as files.

There is no score to chase but your own time, which is exactly why the game has outlived the hardware it was written for. Whether you are here for a quick distraction or a serious attempt at a personal best, the board is ready the moment the page finishes loading, and it costs nothing to try again.

Highlights

  • Arcade presentation over classic rules
  • Instant reset with a freshly randomised board
  • Synthesized 8-bit sound effects with a mute toggle
