About Finding Safe Squares
Welcome to finding safe squares — a complete 16x16 Minesweeper board with 40 mines, first-click safety and synthesized retro sound, running natively in your browser tab.
A satisfied number means every other square it touches is provably safe. The board speaks in numbers. A three means three of the eight touching squares are mined; a satisfied number means every remaining neighbour is provably safe to open.
Use the left mouse button to open squares and the right button to mark suspected mines. Touch users get a dedicated mode button instead of an awkward long press, which keeps flagging fast under time pressure.
Your very first click is always safe. The mine layout is generated after you dig, and the algorithm keeps your opening square and its immediate neighbours clear, so no session ever ends before it has properly begun. Under the hood it is plain modern web technology: React for state, Tailwind for the neon styling, and oscillator-based Web Audio for the ticks, flag clicks, win chime and explosion. There is no plugin, no installer and no account.
Reset as often as you like — every restart randomises a completely new layout, so no two boards are ever quite the same. Whether you are here for a quick distraction or a serious attempt at a personal best, the board is ready the moment the page finishes loading, and it costs nothing to try again.
